  • Chapelle de l'Etoile

A charming chapel along the Col du Chat route, offering superb views over the Lac du Bourget.

Description

The chapel was built at the same time as a 15th century priory, at the request of the priors of Luyrieux at the Prieuré du Bourget-du-Lac. The chapel served as a parish church until the 19th century, with the cemetery built close by. As it became too small and dilapidated, it was replaced by a church built in the administrative centre.
In 1854, the Curé Perrier began restoration works on the chapel, which would be continued by Curé Rosset in 1888. The chapel is a rectangular building with a porch, with a gable roof on two levels and central wall topped by a small clock tower made of molasse stone. The stained-glass windows were a gift from Mme de Chaumont, and the central round stained-glass window depicts the Virgin on a rock beside the lake.
To access the chapel, take the Route du Col du Chat, then follow directions for the Abbaye d'Hautecombe. The chapel will be on your right, overlooking the lake. DO NOT ENTER, simply admire from the outside.
